If your charity works with refugees or asylum seekers, and wishes to improve its fundraising activities, this training is for you. The event is jointly organised by Chinese Information and Advice Centre (CIAC), Midas Charity Appeals and London Chinese Community Network (LCCN).

*Midas is a collection of eight fundraisers covering London, most of Southern England and East Anglia. They do hands-on fundraising, consultancy, mentoring and training and have around 30 clients at any one time. Midas helps many small charities, some much larger ones and also manages large capital appeals.

Which funders help refugees
An introduction to the main trusts, statutory sources and the Big Lottery. Plus: how to find and research potential funders.
Getting the message across to funders
Ian Kerr shows how to get your message across better.
Kathleen Duncan and John Aldridge present the grant makers' perspective.
In one-to-one surgeries during the afternoon, delegates receive instant reactions from John Aldridge to their own appeal letters. An opportunity to test-run your latest appeal.
Developing a fundraising strategy
Deciding where the money will come from, when you will ask for it - and implementing the plan.
Problem solving
Delegates will share the difficulties they face and discuss how to overcome them, with help from the speakers.

Background
Leadership is one of the key community elements that cause things to happen. It helps initiate changes and promotes community benefits. Leadership also as a major factor in determining whether communities would thrive, survive or decline. An active and informed leadership is a key factor that impacting a community's ability to grow.
There are many definitions or understanding of leadership. We are taking the view that leadership is simply communicating a shared vision and transforming that vision into a mutually pursued outcome. More practically, leadership is capacity building - assessing where you are and where you want to go, acquiring skills, and taking action to get you there.
London Chinese Community Network would like to introduce a "Leadership and Community Development Course" for those who want to enhance the community awareness and personal leadership skills.
Course description
The two days "Leadership and Community Development Course" is designed to help delegates understand and develop their leadership skills and deal with several key areas of community development: developing a vision, organizing community campaign, dealing with media and establishing the community leadership.
This course suits
All those in managerial level officers and community workers who are striving to improve the team, organisation or community leadership. What delegates will gain from the course:
- Awareness of the qualities of good leadership
- Knowledge of different leadership model
- Understanding the role and responsibilities of a community leader

Trainer
Thomas Chan working with the Chinese community over 20 years. He is the founder of The Chinese in Britain Forum and he is also the Chair of the Chinese Takeaway Association (UK). He works as an independent consultant. As a professional trainer, Thomas speciallising in diversity, race equality and service delivery training programmes for public authorities.

Trainer
Jabez Lam has been a founding member of numerous Chinese voluntary and community organisations. He is a community activist and campaigner. He had spoken widely on issues of racism, Human Rights, Immigration/Asylum and UK Chinese community affairs. In the 1980s, Jabez established five Chinese community centre in London . He is a leading figure on numerous community campaigns to defend the Chinese community from racist attacks, police injustice, media slander, and victims of tragedies.

What's the purpose of "Skills for Life: Make it Your Business" for the Chinese Community?
It is a tailored-made training session for the Chinese community; it shows how " Skills for Life" affects the community (employers, voluntary organisations) and what we can do about it.
The employer toolkit publication "Skills for Life: Make it your business" aims to raise awareness within the workplace and the business benefits of addressing Skills for Life . It provides information on the practical steps organisations can take and the support available.

'Meet Your Funders' - To Build Effective Relationships

The London Chinese Community Network (LCCN) will be hosting a 'Meet your Funders' event to encourage our members to build up effective relationships with funders. The aims of the event is:
- to raise awareness of funders programmes
- to improve the quality of your funding applications; and
- to voice out the Chinese community needs to funders.
It is also a face to face opportunity to communicate with your funders and seeks advice and information from them.
John Aldridge, Manger, Greater London Region of Lloyds TSB Foundation and David Cutler, Director of The Baring Foundation will be engaged for the day.

Aims of the Workshop
This interactive workshop is to present the CAF Grantmaking Programme for 2004/2005 which aims to support the development of small to medium-sized charitable organisations. The total grant budget for this period is £1.2 million. There a number of different funding packages available:

- Partnership with CAF

Trainer:
Miss Tenika Ah-Wan is Senior Funding Development Officer of Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG). Her interest and experience in this field of work started over 7 years ago in her work as a management consultant within the private and voluntary sectors. Over the past 3 years, Tenika has worked as a freelance arts and community development consultant in Birmingham; supporting individuals and groups with capacity building initiatives, social & creative industries enterprise start-ups, and delivering training and consultancy services in funding, board development, and organisational development and regeneration.

ALG European Seminar
Preparing for Bidding Rounds II
In preparation for forthcoming application rounds under the London ESF Co-Financing programme, this seminar aims to build on its predecessor Preparing for Bidding Rounds I by focusing on the application process of a specific London Co-Financing organisation. The focus in this seminar will be on the forthcoming Association of London Government (ALG) Objective 3 Co-Financing programme.
The Seminar will be on the afternoon of Tuesday 14th September 2004 at London Voluntary Sector Training Consortium (LVSC), 356 Holloway Road (full address and agenda details follow).
The seminar will include:
- A detailed overview of the co-financing prospectus
- An interactive session including a detailed examination of the Association of London Government Co-Financing Application Form and priorities.
This seminar will provide delegates with full support and information from a team of experts in Objective 3 ESF, to assist them with the drafting of applications for the forthcoming application round. Importantly, the seminar will provide applicants with the opportunity to decide whether or not the ALG offers the opportunities for their project to be funded.

Free Health and Safety Training: ‘Health and Safety in the Workplace’
Friday 21 May 2004 (9:30am – 4:00pm)
LCCN will provide a whole days free training at our offices covering workplace health and safety for 15 delegates from the London Chinese voluntary and community sector. This comprehensive training will cover:
- Why manage Health and Safety?
- Statistics
- Office Safety and Welfare Regulations
- Hazard, Risk
- What hazards do you face in your work?
- Risk Assessment and exercise
- Lone Working – Video and exercise
- Violence at Work
- Bullying
- Priorities for Action
In sum, the aim is for the participants to gain a clear concept of relevant areas of health and safety regulations as well as an understanding how to identify a list of hazards present in the office environment etc.
Mrs Mumtaz Mahmood, the trainer, has worked for the London Hazards Centre since July 1999 as a Training and Advice Officer. She is employed on a full time basis by the centre's BME voluntary sector training project funded by the Community Fund. She has delivered training in all aspects of health and safety relating to voluntary organisations. She has a Hons Degree in Chemistry and MSc in Health Promotion from Leeds. She has a certificate in NEBOSH (occupational safety and health). She has also done community development and housing work for several years, in addition to research and teaching for the World Health Organisation. She has a flexible approach to training and is equipped to meet the needs of the clientele.
This one-day training is suitable for front line workers, centre manager as well as volunteers. This is a good opportunity for participants to find out how to undertake the process and to examine ways of ensuring health is on their workplace. It also aims to improve the management of health and safety in the Chinese voluntary and community organisations in London.

Doing community research – gathering information
about the community you serve is a great idea: this
information can help your community group to get you
services right, to lobby local decision makers, and
to apply for funding. This training entitled ‘An
Introduction to Community Research’ aims to do
just that – introduce you to world of community
research. It is aimed at those who are involved in the
running of small London based community organisations.
We will cover the following topics:
- What is Community Research?
- How can community research help small community
organisations?
- Needs assessment, evaluations, and consultations:
What are they? How can these play a part in project
development?
- What are the steps involved in conducting a piece
of community research?
- Who can provide help in conducting community research?
- How to use official statistics to prove need?
- How to get help with conducting community research?
In sum, the aim is for you to gain an understanding
of when it is appropriate to carry out research and
what the kind of processes you need to go through in
order to do this. It will be a fun interactive day in
which you will have lots of opportunity to share problems
and network.
Dr. Giovanna Speciale, the course trainer, is ARVAC’s
Community Research Officer. Prior to holding this post
she worked in an academic environment teaching design
and analysis at the University of Wales, Bangor. After
completing her research doctorate in Psychology, she
then worked as a community project manager for various
organisations in Brazil, Mongolia and then Northern
Ireland. In her current role at ARVAC she provides training
and facilitation to small community groups whom with
to conduct community research.
This training course is suitable for project workers.
Volunteers are also welcome. This is a good opportunity
for you to learn more about how to conduct the community
