Let us strive together!
(Adopted from LCCN Newsletter December 2001)
In the 1960s, we saw the beginning of a major wave
of Chinese migration to the UK. In the following years,
the migrants moved all over the country and about 70%
have engaged themselves in the catering trade. Hence,
wherever you go, one can find a Chinese restaurant or
take-away.
In the early 1980s, there was a noticeable rise in
demand for advice and support services for Chinese migrants.
In response to this increased demand, people began applying
for Government grants to set up specialised charity
groups targeting Chinese clients. The result has been
a growth in the number of Chinese community centres
and groups in different regions. Recently, some groups
have found that they have insufficient funds available
for the daily running of centres due to a change in
funding culture and policy. Due to the lack of resources,
such organisations can only work within very restricted
areas and provide limited services.
With the generous help, and allocation of funds, from
the Home Office Race Equality Unit, LCCN was established.
The aim of the network is to pull resources and gather
support from different organisations within the London
region. It is hoped that by unifying the power from
different organisations, we can achieve the synergy
to provide better quality, and more extensive, services
to the Chinese in London. Though the resources of the
Chinese community are dispersed all over the country,
we believe that unity has greater potential for success
and can generate more respect from the mainstream society
and other minority ethnic groups. I hope the services
of the LCCN will bring a better future for the Chinese
Community.
